What Makes Oruro Carnival Unique?

Unlike commercial carnivals, Oruro is fundamentally a devotional pilgrimage. Dancers cover 4 kilometers in costume over 20+ hours, concluding their march on their knees inside the Sanctuary of Socavón.

Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001, the festival features 48 traditional dance fraternities representing ancient pre-Columbian rituals, European colonial influences, and African slave heritage.
